ADU Construction in Walnut Grove

Room for a parent or rental income, where zoning allows: detached cottages, attached suites and garage conversions, built in stages you can follow on a written schedule.

Zoning Comes Before Anything Else

An accessory dwelling unit is a small, complete home on your property, with its own entrance, kitchen and bathroom. County or city zoning answers three questions up front: is a second unit allowed on your lot, what size can it reach, and may it be rented? The rules differ from place to place.

Once those answers are in, an ADU follows the same staged schedule as any new construction: site work, foundation, framing, utilities, then the interior.

Three Ways to Add a Unit

  • Backyard Cottage

A freestanding unit on its own foundation, with a private door and utility lines trenched out to it from the main house.

  • Attached Suite

Living space added to the side or rear of your home, sharing one wall yet working as a separate dwelling with a private entrance.

  • Converted Garage

The garage you already have becomes a bedroom, bath and kitchenette. Because the shell exists, this route often moves fastest of the three.

What to Weigh

  • Distance From the House

Utility lines run from the main house to the unit, so placing it far back on the lot means longer trenches, more cost and more days.

  • Family or Tenant

A parent who wants to be close and a renter who wants privacy need different layouts, and rental use may be limited by local rules.

ADU Questions We Hear

What's the build time for a unit like this?

A detached unit typically takes several months after approval; converting a garage is often quicker because the walls and slab already exist. Your schedule dates each stage.

Could we rent the unit to a tenant?

Maybe. Some counties and cities allow rental outright, while others limit occupancy to family, so confirm the local rule before you count on rent coming in.

Thinking About a Second Unit?

Tell us about the lot, where a unit might sit and who it's for. We'll talk through the zoning questions to ask first and how the build would be staged.
